This lavishly illustrated children's book is set in the magical Magaliesberg mountains, just a few kilometres west of Johannesburg in South Africa. This region is world famous for its unique fauna and flora and is also known as the 'cradle of human-kind'. The author, Janina Pechova,
has lived there for many years collecting the stories about the Little 5,
the much smaller, smarter cousins of the Big5.

About the Book

They meet through a number of mishaps and decide to live together. They organise flying and weightlifting competitions, which they lose but outsmart the ‘animal catchers’ and the Trixies, the spiteful and vicious goblins.
Throughout the book there are references to the real status of the little animals, to make the story educational as well as entertaining.

Janina Pechova’s blend of delightful illustrations and imaginative storyline takes young readers into a whimsical world of small creatures. In an amusing parody of their big game namesakes the Little5 confront the adversaries of the natural world with wit and adventure, ingeniously embracing real-life conservation and social issues.

In the tradition of African storytelling The Little 5 uses tales of the veld to entertain and inform. An instant classic!

There’s a special thing about children’s books where the writer is the illustrator; an extra harmony. Janina’s artwork is a visual kapow! – vivid and vigorous, full of intrigue and peppered with meaning that the written tale brings out step by step in delicious deliberate dollops.

Denis Beckett - author and social commentator
